10 Mothers Day 2012 Gifts Under $50

Do you know when Mothers Day is this year? Have you started planning what you are going to give your wife and/or mother? Mother's Day is Sunday, May 13 and as we swing towards the 2012 version of Mothers Day, we know one question on everyone's mind (guys especially!); what to get those special women in your life. You could always get her a nice floral arrangement or candles, but those are all items they have come to expect. How do you find that perfect gift that is thoughtful and unique without being too expensive?

Here are 10 Mothers Day gifts that will spread love and happiness, are unique and won't break the bank!

Make A Recipe From a Cookbook and Present Both (The Meal and the Book) To Her

One of my favorite gifts is to make a nice dinner for my wife. As she is the one that usually prepares the meals in our house, it is often a relief for her to be able to sit back and not have to worry about rushing to make something after work. Go out and get a cookbook that she will enjoy and make something from it! At the end of the meal, present her with the book with a nice message written in it about how much you appreciate the love and attention she puts into all the meals she makes. I would recommend one of the Rachel Ray cookbooks or a Jamie Oliver cookbook (for about 14.00 and 22.00 on Amazon).

Help Her to Personalize Her Technology

If you're wife is anything like mine, she has discovered the joys of technology and probably owns a tablet or Kindle. One of the nice things you can do, is find something to help her personalize her favorite device. There are lots of beautiful cases in a variety of styles and colours. There are lots of nice covers for book lovers over at Bobara

Color Photo to Canvas Art

One of the best ideas I've seen is a really personal way of creating a timeless gift. You probably have a lot of nice pictures gathering dust on your hard drive. This is a perfect way to show your wife or mother the joys of being a mother. There are a lot of online sites that make it easy to do this. The nice thing about this kind of gift is that it will last a lifetime, brighten up your walls and be a perfect keepsake. Just upload a favorite digital photo of your family or just the kids and you have a beautiful piece of art to put somewhere special!

Brookstone Wireless Key Finder

While you want to be sensitive to the whole area of age, mother's have a lot on their plates and can often forget where they put the keys. Couple that with kids hiding the keys in unlikely spots, and you can have a very frustrated and unhappy mother or wife on your hands. This is where a device like this key finder can really come in handy. While it is at the upper end of gifts, it can save lots of grief! This might not be for all mothers, but is certainly something for those looking for something more practical.

Spa Time

My friend often goes the spa route when trying to find a gift for his wife. Being able to get out of the house for a little and be pampered, is something that can be a great gift. Many cities have a number of choices for spas. Taking some time and looking through some of the choices to see which your wife or mother would like is always good before spending the money a setting up an appointment. However, anyone you pick will likely have a variety of options. Don't be afraid to ask them about Mothers Day deals or suggestions.

Chocolate Lovers Delight!

Many women love chocolate as a gift! But before you go rushing out to buy a box of Pot of Gold or other large consumer brand chocolate from the grocery store, take a little time to look online. Many smaller boutique chocolate makers sell their products online and make beautiful, mouth watering chocolate. Not only that but a lot of the smaller online sites put a premium on beautiful packaging. Giving a beautifully designed box that goes with the beautiful craftsmanship of the chocolate can speak volumes to the time you have taken to find that perfect gift. Your loved one will appreciate your thoughtfulness and certainly enjoy the taste of handmade chocolates. A couple of sites to start off with are Chocolate Arts or Soma.

Books for Mommy

Books can be a great gift for mothers, especially ones with small children. Some great ideas can be found on Chapters or Amazon. You have the timeless, "I'll Love You Forever" by Robert Munsch or something a little different like, "On the Night You Were Born" by Nancy Tillman. Or if she wants books more for herself, there are some great choices like, "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? and Other Concerns" by Mindy Kaling or "Elizabeth The Queen: The Life of a Modern Monarch" by Sally Bedell Smith. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is another great choice. This is a gorgeous love story set in a traveling circus during the Depression. It’s also a movie, starring Robert Pattison and Reese Witherspoon. (Perfect Mother’s Day gift idea? This book with tickets to a movie inside!)  Or The Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon which tells the incredible true story of an unlikely entrepreneur who mobilized her community and brought hope to the women of Afghanistan.

Leopard Print Scarf

If you wife or mother loves accessories, this Leopard Print Scarf or something similar can be really nice. This one from Indigo can make a nice gift for spring. It's versatile and soft making it ideal for any ensemble. It comes in a couple of colours as well.

Luxury Tea Set

On it's own or combined with another gift, a nice tea set can be great for those times when your wife or mother want to relax. There are many places to get them including the vast array of specialty tea shops cropping up in malls and online. With the online side, you certainly have more choices and may find a more specific blend of tea than in a traditional store.

Home Decor Items

Finally, some wives or mothers love to get gifts that help them create the perfect home atmosphere. If your loved one likes wine, a nice wine decanter can make the perfect gift. One item given to one of my friend's wives was a set of slate coasters and table settings. Using chalk, his wife could create some interesting and beautiful table settings. Place a variety of cheeses on the slate tablet and, using the chalk and some nice handwriting, label the cheeses. Or use the slate coasters to write who sits where when hosting company.

Whatever choice you make, putting time and thought into each gift is a gift all on it's own. Involve the children, if you have any and let them be a part of making this 2012 Mothers Day truly special. Above all, mothers are amazing and this day should truly be a reflection of all the contributions and love they give every day!
