iWishfor Goes to To Seattle Startup Riot 2012

As it has been awhile since we have posted, we wanted to let you in on some of the things that have been going on. About a week or so ago, the iWishfor team traveled to Seattle for the annual Startup Riot event. The Startup Riot event hosts 30 of the top entrepreneurs and startups from around North America and beyond to showcase their projects and vie for prizes, fame and fortune. Well, maybe not fortunes but the top three startups chosen did get to meet with several top VC's as part of the prize package. It wasn't American Idol by any means, but still a great time and, in our own opinion, far more enjoyable.

The iWishfor team wasn't too concerned about making the top three. We just wanted the opportunity to talk about our exciting startup, meet with other entrepreneurs and startup gurus and get some fresh perspective from the panel of Startup Riot judges. As it turns out, we were very excited to make it to Startup Riot as the last startup to be chosen to present. We had applied for the event but our startup had initially not been chosen. After the initial disappointment, the Startup Riot team contacted us and told us that there had been a last minute cancellation and asked if we would like to take the spot. Of course, we jumped at the chance!

The other thing that really excited the iWishfor team was the chance to present in front of approximately 200+ media, investors and entrepreneurs. This was going to be our first big presentation. We were a little nervous but knew that this was going to be really important. We had to nail the presentation, not just because we wanted our app to generate excitement, but also because we were the very last startup to present out of 30. Presenting itself is difficult at the best of times but to be the very last after a tiring day was going to be a challenge.

Well, needless to say, the iWishfor team felt that we hit all the right notes and really got the crowd excited. As far as the presentation itself, we had 3 minutes to pitch our app using only four slides, one of which had to be a title slide. That's an extremely short amount of time to make sure all the important information is conveyed in a way that is interesting and understandable. With two big screens showing the slides behind us, two tv screens in front of us showing the slides and the countdown timer, it was a little intimidating. However, Ian Hancock (founder) was chosen to do the job and he performed it all under the three minute time limit extremely well. We got some great laughs and more importantly, lots of interest in the app. As we discovered later, it was even a greater performance after finding out that Ian had done it all while suffering from Strep Throat. Nathan Leggatt (our co-founder) also did a brilliant job manning the iWishfor table and answering questions.

In between the events, presentations and other things, the iWishfor team got to meet some amazing entrepreneurs and startups at the Startup Riot event. We are constantly amazed at the great ideas and the determination of the other entrepreneurs to create and share their ideas even in the midst of obstacles. We were so privileged to be a part of the Startup Riot event and to share ideas and thoughts with great people.

Here are some of the pictures from the event!

We'd love to share some of the great lessons we learned and do so in an upcoming post. Stay tuned!
